“should I get rid of hair… down there?”

May 18th, 2009

dear apricot,

Okay, so I know we’re all at that necessary level of maturity to talk about these types of things, but I still cringe whenever the subject arises. Nevertheless: What do you think of getting rid of the hair… DOWN there?

I’m considering doing so for the first time for two reasons: A) it’s about that time to bust out the bikinis and I don’t plan on wearing that monokini EVERY beach trip, and B) my boyfriend tolerates it, but has shared with me that he’d like to see the platter completely cleared, if you know what I mean.

I’ve done some research and scared myself with the new found knowledge of potential ingrown hairs and irritations. What do you think of the idea of using a bikini depilatory? Do you believe it’s the safest choice as opposed to shaving or waxing? Or should I just hold off on the idea altogether?

Tay,

I can definitely understand your plight. I think a lot of women are often conflicted with this dilemma (me being one of them), so you are certainly not alone.

I’m sure you already know that shaving, though easy & convenient, isn’t very effective; the hair comes back in 1-2 days, & painful ingrown hairs are rather imminent. Waxing is very effective & is probably the best option. The end results last for up to 2 weeks, & with time the hair growth becomes less thick; each waxing session will hurt less & less, & the hair won’t be as stubborn. But, of course, waxing is not pain-free. There are many brave souls who deal with this method of hair removal like soldiers. I cannot. I have only been waxed down there once, & that was enough to assure me that I will never, ever torture my precious lady parts like that again. But that is just me.

Depilatories are a happy medium, I think. They are very easy to use, & aren’t too expensive. They can be a little nerve-wracking, though, when you begin to think about what they really are: very harsh chemicals. & because you’re using potent chemicals, it’s better to keep the creams away from your delicate areas. Keep them on your bikini line only. Trying to “wipe the platter clean” with a depilatory is not at all safe. (Wiping the platter clean, in general, is not safe, but I’ll get to that in a minute.)

There are really no ways of preventing ingrown hairs, especially in that area. But… whichever method you choose (shaving, depilatories, or waxing), gently exfoliate the area really well, moisturize, & apply witch hazel. Exfoliation will help in preventing ingrown hairs, & witch hazel & moisturizer will soothe your skin while the hair is starting to grow back.

As far as “wiping the platter clean”, I shudder at the thought. The reason we have hair down there is for protection against bacteria & infections. The hair down there even acts as a cushion, say we get hit in that area. To remove that protection leaves you susceptible to vaginal infections & other annoying repercussions. Try explaining this to your boyfriend. Let him know that his fantasy of seeing you seemingly naked as the day you were born is nice, but not practical. If he cares about you, he will not pressure you into taking such drastic measures, which can ultimately hurt your health.

Instead of wanting to remove ALL of the hair down there, why not trim it down a little? Perhaps use a depilatory on your bikini line only, but trim the other hairs down closely. They make special clippers for women in that specific area now, & they’re very simple to use. (I use this one, & it works very well.) Trimming is, by far, the easiest way to tame the area without having to go too extreme. & the best thing about it is that you won’t have to deal with ingrown hairs, because you’re not removing hair, per se. You’re only cutting it. I think that would be your best bet.

I hope this helps some! Happy hair removal!
