“what brands of mineral makeup do you recommend?”

May 15th, 2009

dear apricot,

I’m in the market for mineral makeup. What brands for foundation, concealer, powder, etc. do you recommend?

thatShortChick,

For me, personally, I’ve only tried a few brands, & they are the only ones I have ever used. (Once you find one that you really like, you’ll have no desire to venture elsewhere.) I use two: CoverGirl’s TruBlend mineral powder, & Revlon’s ColorStay mineral foundation.

mineral foundations

I like CoverGirl’s, because it’s very light, & perfect for a quick cover-up. Say you’ve got to run some errands, but don’t feel like putting on a full face of makeup; just enough to leave you feeling confident that you’re not bare faced. CoverGirl’s brand of mineral powder is perfect for that. It’s very natural looking, so while YOU know you’re wearing something, the whole world wouldn’t tell a difference.

Revlon’s mineral foundation is a little heavier in pigment, so you’ll get much more coverage with that than if you were to use the CoverGirl’s alone. While it’s heavier in pigment — meaning the coverage isn’t as sheer — it still feels very light on your skin. It’s not at all heavy, & still looks very natural. The best part is that it lasts for up to 16 hours. (While I have never worn makeup for 16 hours straight, I can definitely say that this foundation doesn’t budge.)

Both powders are perfect in their own little way. What I especially like to do is mix them. I put a decent amount of the CoverGirl mineral powder, & then use Revlon’s mineral foundation over it, but lightly. It’s the perfect blend, because one is light in pigment & the other is heavier, so when the two combine it’s a great match. I also like the idea that I am customizing my own coverage, rather than rely on the makeup to do that.

Needless to say, I’ve been very happy with those two products. I definitely recommend those.

CoverGirl also has another brand of mineral makeup called TruBlend MicroMinerals. While I’ve never tried it, it might be worth it to check it out. It looks fairly good, & not as sheer as the original mineral powder.

concealers

For concealers, try MAC Studio Touch-Up stick; it’s very lightweight & doesn’t have a cakey texture. It’s great, too, that it’s in a pencil form, so that you can put it anywhere. (I had trouble finding this product on their website, so I don’t know if they make it anymore.) Another great brand is Revlon ColorStay concealer is good; I like the idea that it will stay up to 16 hours. A lot of concealers tend to run or disappear after a while. Maybelline’s Pure Cover mineral concealer is another option, especially if you want to stick to that “mineral” feel.

I certainly hope that this helped you some! Remember that finding the perfect makeup is often trial & error. You may to go through several shades & brands before you find the one that does your skin well. But don’t give up! Also, some drugstores have a return policy for makeup, so when you’re checking out, be sure to ask if they accept makeup that has been opened, but only used once.

Happy hunting! (& experimenting!)
