What should every girl have in her closet? What are the basics?

This is a great question! I wanted to give you a slightly unconventional list of items you should have in your closet. Everyone will tell you that “You need to have a trench coat!” or “You need a wool sweater!” But in all the years I’ve been dressing myself, I have NEVER needed a trench coat, nor have I needed a wool sweater. Perhaps it’s because I live in California, but I know it’s because that neither of those items are my style. Every woman is different.

For me, these are the pieces that an everyday girl should have in her closet. Maybe some of these items won’t fit directly into your personal taste, but keep an open mind; there are many different variations to them.

Every girls needs:

• A few plain white t-shirts. For uniqueness, get some with different attributes to them. Maybe one with a tiny pocket, & another that is V-necked. (Another great way to make a plain white tee unique is by writing something catchy on it.)
• A couple of pairs of blue jeans, that fit superbly. Take one pair & distress the life out of it!
• An interesting purse; preferably in a bold color.
• A few pretty dresses (which can easily be converted into to winter wear, if paired with tights & a chunky sweater).
• A pair of boots, in black & in brown.
• A few pairs of denim shorts for summer wear.
• Chain necklaces, ones that can be layered with other jewelry.
• A chunky cardigan (the perfect cover-up for cold nights).
• Several pairs of black tights.
• A comfortable pair of black flats.
• A graphic scarf; it will give a plain white t-shirt a bit of intrigue.

All of these pieces can be easily mixed & matched with each other: the t-shirt could be worn underneath the dress; the dress could be worn with the scarf & the boots; the sweater could be worn with the denim shorts & the t-shirt; the list goes on…

The key is to get pieces that are least likely to become out of style in a few years. All of these items are classic, & could be used in a variety of ways, depending on the outfit & your mood. & if you decide to change up your style a little bit in the upcoming months, these items will not suffer too much in the translation. They can be easily converted to fit your ever-changing tastes in fashion.
