“I don’t know if I should I get my eyebrow pierced…”

dear apricot,

I have always considered getting my eyebrow pierced. No matter how many horror stories I hear about an eyebrow piercing, I still want one. I have always been the type of girl who remains true to herself. I have short brown curly afro-like hair and most of my clothes I make myself from other things or are from thrift stores. I am also an artist and will be going to art school. I think that if I get this eyebrow gauge then I can better express the person I am/want to be. But then I think about how people might perceive me if I get one.  Also, my parents despise me getting one, but I think if I do they could eventually deal with it.

Do you think that getting my eyebrow pierced would be a bad decision for me to make? Do you ever feel like your treated differently because you have your nose pierced? I’m searching to find new ways to express myself but I’m not sure if getting my eyebrow pierced is the best way. Could you help me out?

Confused Art Student,

I can’t make the decision for you, but I can say what I think, & I think that if you want to rock an eyebrow piercing, then you should go for it! You sound like a girl with a unique style, so I think it would be perfectly appropriate to who you are if you were to get your eyebrow pierced. Life is too short to be wrapped up in silly thoughts of what others might think of you. Chances are, what you think people think of you is totally off base, anyway. & if they DO happen to think you’re a bitch/drug-dealer/party-girl… so be it! Those are merely assumptions, & if people choose to make those assumptions, they are foolish.

Have I, personally, ever been treated differently because of my nostril piercing? No. I’m sure people have looked at me differently, & perceived me to be something I’m not. Or maybe they haven’t. I truthfully don’t notice — nor do I care — if people are giving me weird looks because of my nostril ring. It’s my body, not theirs, & I can do whatever I want with it. Same goes for you.

The great thing about piercings is that they are not permanent. If you ever tire of having your eyebrow pierced — like I did with my navel piercing — you can take out the jewelry & your body will close up the hole itself. Simple as that.

If you DO decide to get your eyebrow pierced, I suggest using H2Ocean Piercing Aftercare Spray during the healing process. It’s an all natural sea salt spray, & it works much more effectively than other saline solutions. I used it during my nostril piercing’s healing, & I highly recommend it.

Most importantly, though, don’t let silly societal thoughts keep you from living the kind of life you want. As the saying goes: Be who you are & say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, & those who matter don’t mind.

Good luck, & let me know if you decided to take the plunge!
